The Story Behind The Mythic Mindset

First of all, THANK YOU for visiting The Mythic Mindset. My name is Jeff Sheerin, and I’m pumped that you’re here.

I’m the owner, writer and developer of this site - and I’d like to use this opportunity to briefly talk about how The Mythic Mindset came to be.

If you haven’t already, I definitely recommend reading the About page first so that you can understand the true purpose and mission of this site, and the type of content you can expect. Then, come back here and learn the story.

It Started With The Journey for Greatness

In short, The Mythic Mindset was born from my ongoing journey for consistent improvement in MTG, in pursuit of the highest levels of play.

As digital play has ramped up even more with MTG Arena, striving to reach Mythic on Arena has become a monthly ritual for me, as it has for many players. Being able to work towards reaching Mythic and grinding for top 1000/1200 of Mythic players is one of my favorite aspects of the game.

I go into every month with a clear minimum objective: end the season ranked in the Top 1200. The monthly grind provides me with a clear goal, all while enabling me to pursue my bigger objectives along the way - consistent overall improvement in the game and qualification for higher levels of play.

More Than Just a Ranking

After reaching Mythic month after month, I started to think of the word “Mythic” as more than just the highest ranking on a gaming platform. I started embracing it as part of my player identity, holding my level of play, my focus and my attitude to a higher standard. I was no longer just Mythic for 2-3 weeks a month. In my mind, I was Mythic everyday, and Mythic had become my mindset.

Additionally, striving for Mythic every month transformed my approach to Magic, helping me identify and develop key skills that the best players in the world demonstrate habitually. Yes, I learned how to navigate key interactions in specific matchups, sideboarding strategies and other critical gameplay skills. But more importantly, I also began to master the arts of playing to my outs and proper mulliganing. I learned the importance of focusing on making the very best play I can, every time, visualizing my wins, the real impact of tilt and countless other non-technical skills - otherwise known as mindset skills.

Thus, the concept of The Mythic Mindset was born.

Why a Website?

Simply put, I’m a lifelong writer. We all have certain skills that come natural to us, and for me, that’s writing.

Between 2017 and 2018 I wrote weekly newsletters and articles for the MTG Pro Tutor podcast (some of which you’ll find here). Since then I’ve focused heavily on self-improvement at Magic and personal development, playing digitally everyday, grinding more big tournaments and continually raising the bar for myself as a person.

To say the least, the past few years have been a tremendous growth period for me as a player and as a person. I want to share my experiences and lessons learned with other players in hopes of helping them reach their goals in the game - and potentially - new heights in life.

And thus, TheMythicMindset.com was cast into the multiverse.

I hope that The Mythic Mindset becomes a valuable resource for you as you step up your game. Please be sure to share this site with your friends and discord groups, and come back often.

One last thing - give me a shout if there’s a specific topic in Magic: The Gathering you’d like to learn more about. The Mythic Mindset is designed for the benefit of YOU.
